DD #27: Start to Bambooo 11

The last day in January 2009 shall be my first day of 'Digital Painting' on the Bamboo by using not only the outline but also shadows and colors to define figures and shapes. Level-up, baby!

I used the photograph as direct reference to copy the pose. Call the direct copy thing cheating, but my goal was just the color and shade practice. And I think it was an useful experience for further non-ref projects!
The face is quite a mess, I think I will take some extra lessons focussing on this.

DD #26: Start to Bambooo 10

Loomis helped me with vertical female proportions today - huge step!
The red one is an indirect copy of a runway shot of Adriana Lima.

DD #25: Start to Bambooo 09

I think I'm short before syncronizing my pencil skills to the Bamboo, it's quite intuitive already! I'm surprised how quick me and my Bamboo became friends :]
This means I can get back to my "main quests" like human anatomy and the personal stroke / style. For optimizing my props understanding I started today with abstracting basic shapes and composition lines from the poses of posemaniacs to construct a pose with working believable overall props. I think I should study shading for more plastic appearance next time.

So here we come to the human body. First we take some loads of quick glances.

DD #22: QCheck + StatoBooo 06

Hey peeps, as I'm strolling thoughtfully through the doodles I recognize my overall proportion errors the cosmicbear was pointing to. Here's the evidence:

DD #21: Sunday Special

By having no chance to get in touch with my Bamboo today I decided to run a new round of "Sunday Special". Our special guest today is multiple: first I found the great da-vinci-like thread by Michael Mentler on conceptart.org and studied his hand bones studies (1, 2) (very useful: the 3-to-3 grid!), then I started to train figure blocking on posemaniacs and last I tried some basic real still life studies. At least 4 hours pencil work - I felt pale gleams of perfection running through my veines.
Am I obsessed?

DD #20: Starting to Bambooo 05

This is the first try on indirect copying digital references using simple still life photographs from my favourite stock photo site. I'm climbing out the cot!

Riddle: From which movie did I draw these props?
(direct on-media copy)

DD #18: Starting to Bambooo 03

Today: Architectural Lines.
First I started copying directly from unterlaying photographs, then I tried some indirect copy (quite bad). Following the AGENDA I will abstract basic shapes from complex scenes tomorrow.

DD #17: Starting to Bambooo 02

What do Graphic Tablets and Chain Saws have in common? - It's all about practicing!
So like being reborn on another planet I start a new artistic eduaction.
.. I won't grunt at anyone laughing, as I am laughing myself already on the whole session :D
289 times the diagonal line. phew.

DD #16: Starting to Bambooo 01

For now, everyone should close his eyes, because we have just fallen millions of miles below the sketching standard, because: I'm starting on a new medium, the graphic tablet. There will be one week of testing to check weither this is possibly the wrong way.
Notice: I think the skills on proportions still remain in the Bamboo World.

DD #15: Dooodle

Since Nightwatch sucks all energy out of you and one is always surrounded by fellows this day's output was quite lousy, quick and dirty. My apologies, that's not THE way.

DD #14: About Basics

Nightwatch 3 / 3.

(just felt no muse for doodling a whole session. but the importance, the understanding therefore is growing - kind of ripening process i quess)

'nuff said.

DD #13: Dooodle

Nightwatch 2 / 3.

I knew, this would be a creepy night, a quite earthquake of chaotic synapses inside my head. There was no muse, no feelings at all. And noticing the crudely boring circumstances I started the free brainstorm. I sketched what just ran through my head. I drew the girls from upside down, to get a new view on the abstract and complex shape. I drew all photos made of one guy in one evening in one piece. Funny, Freaky - Fucked up.

DD #12: Focus on Hands 03

Nightwath 1 / 3.
ska-doodle!

Second Image:
My Reference was the "Blonde", a sketch by Phil Noto (via avon t.), a great master of fine and comic arts. Looking up to the pearls of his mastery I decided to try and copy the pose, with all its beauty, personality and uniqueness. Of course I missed all those virtues by messing up the face and, at first, the whole pose. The difficulty laid in the optical enlargement on the medium, which twisted proportions in some parts in relation to each other. At the second try I just scribbled the figure as I saw it - and it worked (better). So the experiment resulted in the cognition of my lack of figurative intuition -> more posemaniacs sessions!

And anyway, isn't she just beautiful?

DD #11: Focus on Hands 02

Phew ... any more words are not worth these results from live reference (my own left hand)
(I was on the train and had good gauge left in my veines from yesterday's night)

DD #10: Focus on Hands 01

Yes, right, today I haven chosen the supreme drawing discipline: hands. They are tricky, they are transforming, they are just brilliant. I found a sketch from 2001 (!) drawing my dad's hands on some ski vacation, it's the last one below. I wonder if I made any progress from then to now :P
To do it right, I picked my old Loomis 'Head & Hands' Edition to try and copy the depicted hand construction ways (from p120). There's still a lot of work to do.

DD #9: Focus on Feet

When I noticed the crippled feet I draw all the time on 30 and even 60Secs Sessions I decided to invest the today's sketching hour in learning more about the foot's and leg's anatomy. I just picked my Barcsay's Anatomy Edition (great basics for artists!) to try and copy some elemental shapes. See yourself below!

.. Later I tried to copy some perfect work of Ruas from his portfolio: Souvlaki Space Station - but the results won't fit to any audience. Anyway: check it out! This guy just got accuracy and STYLE!

DD #8: Routine Day

I thougt of a new experiment: just drawing base bodies from poses to get proportions and shapes in my head to improve faster - but 30sec is too fast for base body bubbles. Or I'm just too slow :/
(Besides, I talked to the Cosmic Guru and he wouldn't hear me unless I won't go on for two more weeks. And so I will.)

// 70x 30 SECS (PM): ~35 Min. + 3 special SHADED poses // DIN A4 // Pencil HB
